Athletics & Activities Blog – February 28

Celebrations for Things Won…and Lost – as well as a lot to look forward to in March

Welcome to the last day but one of February 2020.  As we enter March, it’s exciting to think about all of the new ASAs we’ve got in store for students, new Zumba and yoga classes for adults, and a party for all of our Season 2 & 3 SEASAC participants.  Oh, and did we mention winning the 2020 YAC Basketball Championships?  Never a dull moment at ISY…

HS Boys & Girls Basketball Take the YAC Championships

In an amended Yangon Athletic Conference basketball championship tournament, the boys and girls teams beat YIS and ISM to bring home and hang onto (respectively) the league championship trophies!

While the girls have held the trophy for the past 7 years, the boys were able to win it back after letting it go to ISM for the past three years.

With the season shortened due to the Coronavirus outbreak, and the SEASAC basketball tournaments cancelled, this tournament was the seniors’ last shot at playing together with their ISY teams.  We are going to miss these dynamic young leaders as they head out into the world next year – but it sure was fun to watch them play on the home court one last time.

The Session 3 ASA packet can be found HERE!

Thursday, March 5 @ 7pm Registration Closes

Monday, March 9 Session 3 ASAs Begin

*Keep in mind that some ASAs will fill up immediately!  Please be sure you know your Power School username and password information before registration begins.  If you have questions regarding the upcoming session of ASAs, please email Lisa Isom at lisom@isyedu.org.  For Service Learning ASAs, please contact Todd Davis at todavis@isyedu.org.

Session 3 ASA Registration Information

On Tuesday, March 3rd at 7pm, the After School Activity registration will open on PowerSchool.  In order to enable all students to have a chance to get into their top choices, students/parents will only be able to register for two events on the first day.  At 7pm on Wednesday, March 3rd, registrations will open up for all remaining activities.
There will be a ‘Waiting List’.  If an ASA fills up quickly, you will have the opportunity to be added to a waiting list (‘Join Waitlist’) or choose a different activity.  If you choose to be added to the Waiting List this will count as one of your two choices today.  From Wednesday, March 3rd after 7pm, if you choose to stay on a waiting list, you cannot select another activity for that date/time. Activity waiting lists will be looked at to decide if more sessions of any single activity need to be added.  Students will be taken off the waiting list and added to the actual activity if spaces become available.

We strongly recommend you login to PowerSchool BEFORE registration opens to test your PowerSchool login.  Before contacting the PowerSchool support team you could take a look at this handy guide on resetting your PowerSchool login.  If that doesn’t work then please contact PowerSchool support at powerschool@isyedu.org.

If you have questions regarding the upcoming session of ASAs, please email Lisa Isom at lisom@isyedu.org.  For Service Learning ASAs, please contact Todd Davis at todavis@isyedu.org.

Session 3 Swim Team Registration

The ISY swim team is now a year-round program.  If your child did not participate in Season 2 but would like to tryout* for Season 3, please sign up HERE.  Tryouts will be scheduled for the week of March 9th.

*Tryouts entail making sure that each child has the ability to swim laps with confidence in the pool and understands the basics of three strokes: breast, back, freestyle.  If your child is unable to swim laps or needs a great deal of work on stroke technique, the Swim ASA for his/her age group is recommended.

If you are unsure if the swim team or the ASA is better for your child, I suggest registering for the swimming ASA, because it will fill up, and then cancel that ASA if your child makes the swim team

If your child is currently swimming but does not intend to continue for season 3, please email Lisa Isom at lisom@isyedu.org.

SEASAC Party

It’s been a tough season to be a SEASAC athlete.  With the Coronavirus outbreak on the international news on a daily basis, and and the situation changing moment-by-moment, all of our SEASAC hosts made the difficult decision to cancel their tournaments and festivals.

For this reason, we thought it would be fun to get students together to play some games, enjoy the swimming pool, and have dinner together.

ISY has invited each of our SEASAC athletes, artists and MUN delegates to a fun-filled evening at the American Club on Friday, March 13th.  We would like to celebrate our CHINTHE PRIDE and finish this SEASAC season – especially for our seniors – on a high note.

Elementary School Fun Day

This year’s ES Field Day has been moved to Friday, March 6th.  The entire event will take place in the gym so we are going to change the name to ES Fun Day!

Here is the schedule for this year:
Pre-K – Grade 1
8am-10am
Group Photo followed by Fun Day stations
Pre-K & KG will have their lunches in classrooms following the events.
Grade 1 will have lunch as per usual.
11am-12pm – ES Lunch

Grade 2-5 Fun Day
12-2:30pm
Group Photo followed by Fun Day stations
HOMEROOM COLOR or THEME
In lieu of t-shirts, each homeroom will come up with a color or theme. We encourage each class to dress up, decorate, make signs, etc. Just make sure your child is dressed comfortably and can plan to run around for a couple of hours.

VOLUNTEERS:
We are looking for volunteers to help with stations, so please let your child’s teacher know if you would like to help with this year’s event.

As we head into a long holiday weekend, I would like to remind everyone that the pool will be closed on Monday for the Peasants’ Day national holiday.  There will be no lap swimming or swim team practices on Monday.  The fitness room will still be available througout the day.

COVID 19 Self-Declaration Reminder

We would like to remind you that visitors to the ISY campus need to confirm that they have not been to China, or knowingly come into contact with people who have travelled from China in the last 14 days. Additionally, we are now asking that the same conditions apply to anyone coming from South Korea on or after Tuesday, 25th February. People who have transited through airports in these places are OK to come on to campus.

Students who have travelled from either of these areas need to report to the ISY Clinic. This is in line with guidance that ISY is receiving from International Health Authorities with whom we are in daily contact.

This and other updates can be found on the website on our health clinic page.
