Jonathan O’Sullivan –  Athletics and Activities Coordinator

Dear Chinthes,

I can report to you all that there has been a wonderful response to after school activities this session. The response was so good that some ASAs were full! Please read below for more information about ASAs.

Something else that was great to see were the high school volleyball tryouts in the gym this week. It is so uplifting to see student athletes returning to ISY. The next big event for volleyball will be the upcoming city wide tournament and then the Yangon Athletic Conference (YAC) volleyball league, both starting soon. Middle schoolers (MS), it is your time to join a sports team. This week we will start MS basketball. To find out more continue reading below.

Another team starting this week is the ISY swim team. If you are interested, continue reading to find the signup link and dates and times for tryouts.

Another encouraging thing to see this week is the students using the facilities. I have seen students playing volleyball, football and basketball, as well as using the fitness/weights room. Please look out for schedules and more information on the facilities below.

After School Activities (ASA)

ASAs will start this week on the 29th of August. If a child has registered for an ASA their parents should have received an email to confirm that child’s registration. The email will state what ASA, where, the instructor, when and what day. ASAs will run for 45 minutes each time.

ASA times:
Elementary school: 2:20 – 3:05 PM
Secondary school: 2:40 – 3:25 PM

If you want to play please fill out this form. This tournament is for middle school (MS) and high school (HS) athletes. If demand is high, trials will be held.

High School (HS) Athletics

Congratulations to those athletes who made their respective volleyball teams. I have talked to the coaches and we are all in agreement about how happy we were to see the enthusiasm for HS sport returning to ISY. These teams will represent ISY at the Yangon city wide tournament to kickstart the YAC volleyball season. This tournament will be held at YIS on the 2nd and 3rd of September.

HS volleyball teams will train on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00.

If you are interested in playing table tennis there is a Yangon city wide tournament coming up on the 10th of September. If you are interested in representing ISY, please fill out this form. If demand is high, trials will be held.

Facilities

Our wonderful facilities are becoming more and more popular with the new school year starting. Thank you to all those that are using the booking system! It is very important that we all use the booking system and sign the waiver form before we use the facilities. This means that there is a limit on how many use our spaces at one time. This is especially important at the moment.

If you haven’t signed the waiver form yet, there is a link here.

There is a link to the facility booking form here.

Please also remember that if you are using an indoor space you must be wearing a mask.

Covid-19 Temporary Measures – August 2022

  • Mask wearing indoors while with other people will be mandatory.  All students will be required to wear a mask indoors and this includes the gym.  The exceptions are the pool and while eating.
  • Students will be encouraged to eat outdoors as much as possible.  Students will be allowed to eat indoors and in the cafeteria for now but will be encouraged to socially distance while eating.
  • Classrooms at ISY will be well ventilated with doors and windows open as much as possible.
  • Students will be encouraged to wash their hands and/or use hand sanitizer regularly and we ask that students keep up this practice at home.
  • Covid-19 test kits will be sent home with students every Friday (2 per student).  We ask everyone to test on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.
  • If a student tests positive we ask that you inform the ISY Clinic as soon as possible to get advice on how long the student should remain at home (clinic@isyedu.org).  We will continue to inform you of the first cases of Covid if they occur in your Grade or if a student’s teacher has a suspected case.
  • If a student has flu like symptoms (fever, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, muscle/joint aches, tiredness) please keep them at home, test them using a rapid test kit and monitor them closely.
