Mission

The International School Yangon is a community of compassionate global citizens.

Vision

We aim to develop lifelong learners who will be a force for positive change in the world.

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful week of random acts of kindness organized by our Student Council. See photos below.

Congratulations to all our elementary school students who took part in the Wizard of Oz musical production. What a wonderful job they did. Check out the ISY Facebook page for some great photos of the event.

Our students are so good at demonstrating the ISY learner Attributes. This week alone we had the Grade 4’s planning for a service learning project, students advocating for more compost bins on campus and for more swimming opportunities, classes taking responsibility for cleaning up after recess time and students in an After School Activity filming short videos on the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and what they mean to them.

Tomorrow is the much anticipated Family Fun Fair, there is so much fun planned for this day.

Dr Hedger introduced the Chinthe Fund in an email to the community today. He shared that after deliberation with the committee and leadership team, ISY will be creating a new fund called the Chinthe Fund.  We will commit as a community to raising $15,000 USD a year.  This money will be split evenly and be dedicated towards the operations of each organization. The first fund raising event is the Family Fun Fair tomorrow.

Just a reminder that you can bring guests, they will need to be signed in by a school ID holder. Students should come with their families. Please also bring a reusable water bottle, there will be water stations around the campus, or buy one on the day from our store. See more information below.

Grade 4 have a special service learning project during the event. They will be hosting children from the Care for the Least Orphanage at the event. They have raised money to provide these children with tickets for the event. What wondeful compassionate students we have here at ISY.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for Chinthe Social, see the poster below, we would love you to join us for this event.

The entrance fee for each person is 5,000 kyat on the day. You can pay in cash at the gate on the day.

We will provide all sorts of entertainment to delight all ages, including a ferris wheel, a merry-go-round and a bouncy slide. Each of our Student Service Learning Groups will hold an event, such as inflatable sumo wrestling, a fake jail, a photobooth, face painting, dunk tank, and pie face.

All rides and activities will require coupons that you can buy at the fair itself.

We will have a variety of outside vendors who will be selling delicious vegetarian food and drink. Food and drink sales will be cash only and prices will vary depending on the menu items. We also have vendors who will be selling a selection of goods including some toys and games. These sales will also be cash only.

It may be a hot day, and we would like to remind you to bring a water bottle in an effort to reduce waste. There will be plenty of water stations. If you forget your water bottle, please check out our new Chinthe Zay store where you can buy ISY merchandise.

Service Learning Spotlight

The ISY Family Fun Fair is organized by our Student Councils and Service Learning Groups. In the lead up to the Fun Fair, we are spotlighting these groups to bring awareness to what they do and what they will be raising money for on the day.

You can read more about service learning at the ISY Family Fun Fair on our ISY website’s Service Learning page.

Random Acts of Kindness Week

Studies have shown that acts of kindness increase the production of serotonin and oxytocin, chemicals that help heal wounds, promote optimism and encourage feelings of happiness?  Showing kindness to others has also been shown to decrease levels of stress, depression and anxiety.

February 13-17 the elementary student council is sponsoring Random Acts of Kindness week.  Throughout the week students will be actively practicing ISY’s mission, a community of compassionate citizens, by thinking of and acting on simple gestures of kindness that bring joy, care and friendship into the world.

No act of kindness is too small or too simple, so consider taking a moment to bring a bit of kindness to the world around you.  Here are just a few ideas:

  • Offer a compliment
  • Put your phone down and actively listen
  • Smile and greet a stranger
  • Give away items you don’t need
  • Contact someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Forgive freely

Ms. Patty is available for all ISY families.  She can be reached at escounselor@isyedu.org

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing

From February 20 to March 3, student in Grades 2 to 9 will be sitting MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics (and Science from Grade 4). MAP assessments are online adaptive assessments that provide useful data in developing a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic achievement and growth.

To ensure a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic growth and achievement, teachers combine MAP assessment data with all other student data that they have collected in the classroom. This combination of data informs teacher instruction in meeting the needs of each child. MAP assessment data is not the basis for a student’s academic grade as reported in Semester Report Cards.
