ISY Learning Story
Pre-K and KG Build a Sense of Belonging

This is the first post in a series called ‘ISY Learning Stories’.  These articles showcase activities in the classroom reflecting our vision, mission and strategic themes.

In support of ISY’s compassionate Mission and Vision, the ISY Learner Attribute of Compassion and the Strategic Themes of Inclusion and Culture and Diversity, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten has been focusing on guiding students to develop a sense of belonging in their classroom and with their peers. Building a sense of belonging helps children have a sense of acceptance, respect, inclusion and support in their school and classroom setting. When students feel a sense of this, they are better able to focus on their learning.

To develop a sense of belonging, students’ first need to understand what belonging is. Ms Ruth and Ms. Vickie have been singing songs about belonging together, grouping objects that belong together, graphing likes, as well as how we are the same and different. Other activities and lessons include weekly messages, such as, “We belong together,” counting classmates, charting who is missing, and learning to give compliments.

Through observation, listening to student conversations and comments, the teachers are able to assess the progress students are making towards the childrens’ development of their sense of belonging in the classroom and at ISY. What a pleasure it was to hear Alfie say, “Can I draw a smiley face because we all belong together?” Teachers are noticing children are now independently greeting each other and helping each other. This is wonderful to see as it indicates the children are feeling the sense of connection and belonging we want all children to feel at ISY.
