This past July, 4 ISY students, Steven, Haein, Gautam, and Crystal [Class of 2022] headed to Melbourne, Australia to compete in the Junior World Math Competition for the first time in ISY history. These 4 students qualified after competing in the Southeast Asia Math Competition (SEAMC) in Ho Chi Minh City last March.

At the World Competition, over 80+ students compete in 12 rounds- 3 individual rounds and 9 team rounds.

Steven [Class of 2022]  was one of the 5 trophy winners, placing second in the overall competition. His breakaway was in part due to winning the individual Codebreaker round where competitors have a mere 5 seconds to complete a math problem.

“It’s intense. The first round isn’t so bad, but the finals were really nerve wracking with someone holding a microphone in front of you counting down from 5 while you are trying to figure out the answer.”

Another student, Gautam [Class of 2022] earned bronze in the individual Challenge and Knowledge category. His favorite part of the 6 day competition was the chance to be on Trinity College’s campus and meet other mathematicians, some that have become mentors to him.

And to top off the event, Steven, Haein, and Crystal received silver in the team competition. When asked about this next season, they replied they are keeping their expectations low as they know this year’s competition is going to be harder in the new senior competition (Grades 10-12) versus last year’s junior competition (Grades 7-9.)

The Math Competition Club meets Thursdays after school and is led by ISY Faculty, Mark Cvengros and Chooi Tang. Next, the team will go to Jakarta for SEAMC senior division on Oct 18-20, 2019.

We couldn’t be prouder of these 4 students for representing ISY. Congratulations!
