ISY Family Fun Fair – Thank You!

Mike Simpson

Secondary School Principal

February 24, 2022

I hope that you all enjoyed our ISY Family Fun Fair last Saturday.

It was a great day and we are very proud of our Student Councils and Service Learning Groups who organized it and provided the entertainment. We are grateful to our staff who worked hard behind the scenes in support of our students and the vendors who came to sell food and merchandise.

Finally, we would like to thank our community for attending this event in such large numbers. It was a wonderful community event and it was a perfect way to start fundraising for our new Chinthe Fund in support of our ISY Partner Projects: Yangon Animal Shelter, Care to the Least Center, and Kalihtaw School.

The Wizard of Oz and The ISY Learner Attributes

If you attended our students’ recent production of The Wizard of Oz, you would have been impressed by our students’ confidence, poise and sense of fun on stage.

Their final Sunday night performance saw everything come together just as our students had hoped it would when they were introduced to the script less than three months earlier.

We obviously have a lot of talented actors, singers, and dancers but it takes more than talent to achieve what our students were able to achieve together in such a short space of time.

The Wizard of Oz was, in part, chosen as this year’s production as the main characters all demonstrate our ISY Learner Attributes of ISY Learner Attributes of Compassion, Collaboration, Communication, Courage, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Reflection. Last week, we asked some student performers and Ms. Bekka Jensen, one of our directors, how focusing on these attributes contributed to the success of the production. You can read their thoughts here.

    Secondary School Art

Check out the new posts on the Secondary School Art Facebook page.
Grade 10 students have been working on architectural drawings inspired by the work of artist Ian Murphy. These are part of a unit of work ‘MY CITY.’
This week, our Grade 9 students exhibited their violin sculptures and their associated sketches and commentary.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing

From February 20 to March 3, student in Grades 2 to 9 will be sitting MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics (and Science from Grade 4). MAP assessments are online adaptive assessments that provide useful data in developing a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic achievement and growth.

To ensure a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic growth and achievement, teachers combine MAP assessment data with all other student data that they have collected in the classroom. This combination of data informs teacher instruction in meeting the needs of each child. MAP assessment data is not the basis for a student’s academic grade as reported in Semester Report Cards.

SEASAC Model United Nations & Swimming

On Wednesday, we had a Secondary School Town Hall meeting to send our Model United Nations (MUN) and Swimming Teams off to their South East Asia Student Activities Conference (SEASAC) events. Our MUN team is in Saigon and our swimmers are in Singapore. The Town Hall finished in the pool for a swimathon that ended in a race between teachers and students.
