January 24, 2020, Update

Christina Powers, Secondary School Principal

Today we celebrated Olympiad, which has been labeled by an ISY student as “The Greatest Day of the School Year”. Unlike most sports day, Olympiad has little to do with competitive sporting activities. It is about teamwork, cross-grade collaboration, school spirit, and modeling & embracing compassion. The day is filled with activities that all students can participate and be successful in. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a grade 6 student be cheered on by a senior. This day embodies our ISY mission of being compassionate leaders as our senior students are responsible for their team, thier spirit, and ensuring that all students are valued and successful.

Below are a few quotes from this year participants:

“What do you think is the goal of Olympiad and did you enjoy the day?”

  • “Olympiad is about team spirit. I love having different grade levels be a part of the team. It is fun to get to know students from other grade levels.”
  • “Olympiad is a fun way to get to know people who you would normally not have the opportunity to talk with. Now there are seniors that I can say hi to and they know who I am”
  • As a senior, it was fun to have ownership of a team. It was our job to maintain energy and team spirit and to ensure that everyone was included and successful.”
  • As a grade 6 student, I was nervous and didn’t know what to do. However, my teammates helped me and I had a great day”
  • “It was a great way to relieve my stress and have a great time”

Service Learning Action Afternoon: As service-learning is at the heart of our ISY mission. This afternoon was dedicated to our Service Learning groups. The purpose of an action day is to dedicate time within the school day to put into action many of the passions that have resulted in our action projects. Students who are not currently a part of a Service-learning group had the opportunity to learn about service activities that they may wish to join in the future, learn about the environment, or participate in a trash hero event.

Semester 2 begins on Monday.  Reports will be made available by Friday, January 31, 2019.

Color Run 2020:  The color run with is organized by ISY’s Girls- up and YIS’s Building blocks will be hosting a color run at YIS. The run begins at 8:00 am at YIS. Profits will be donated to organizations in Yangon that support female empowerment

INTERNATIONAL DAY INFORMATION

International day takes place on the 15th of February. Each country has a country coordinator that will be sharing information.

There will be a cultural show on the day with performances by students.  Each act should be no longer than 3 minutes in length and ideally be a group piece involving several students.  To participate in the cultural show, please sign-up here by Friday, January 24.

There are a limited number of spaces and signing up does not automatically mean your child will be performing. You will get an email notice after January 24 if the act has been approved.

There is a mandatory dress rehearsal the day before the cultural show, Fri, Feb 14 for all participating groups. It will be after school.

There will also be a Parade of Nations where students will walk with their flags. If a student would like to walk with a country other than their noted nationality in Powerschool,  please email Communications Associate, Ivy Kuhn by Friday, January 24. Her email is ikuhn@isyedu.org
