Jonathan O’Sullivan –  Athletics and Activities Coordinator

Dear Chinthes,

It has been a very busy week here at ISY. We have had lots of athletics and activities happening here and around ISY this week.
The ISY high school badminton team played their Yangon Athletic Conference tournament on Friday and Saturday. The high school girls and boys touch rugby teams played in a mini tournament on Wednesday evening against other invited schools. For results and a rundown of how those competitions went please continue reading in the High Athletics section below.
Our ISY elementary school students were in action this week as well. After an internal elementary school football tournament last week, it was time for the basketball lovers to have their turn. On Tuesday ISY hosted Yangon International School. Tomorrow ISY will be represented by two elementary school football teams in a tournament at the 3M fields. Please continue to read below in the Elementary Athletics section for more information on football and basketball.

    Elementary School Athletics

With the success of last week’s football mini-tournament, this week our young basketballers got their chance to show their skills. ISY was pleased to welcome Yangon International School on Tuesday night. YIS brought two teams with them, a lower and an upper elementary school team.
After a good warm up, our young athletes were ready when YIS showed up. Supported by a great crowd of older students, teachers and family, these athletes showed everyone their abilities and heart when it comes to playing basketball and representing ISY. The crowd was very well entertained throughout both games.
These were friendly games and there were no scores taken. The main goal of these games was to have students play against other schools and different players and play in a team with a uniform and to be an ISY representative. I think that our athletes achieved all these goals, as well as having fun!
Today (Friday), our young swimmers will have their turn as ISY hosts an invitational swim meet. Attending this meet will be swimmers from ILBC International School, British School Yangon and Yangon International School. This meet is for swimmers from grades 3-8. It will be a great opportunity for our swimmers to experience a proper swim meet.
The meet will start at 4:00 pm and go to about 7:00 pm.
This week’s elementary school sports don’t end with the swimming meet on Friday night. Tomorrow (Saturday), ISY has two elementary school teams entered into a tournament at the 3M field. This tournament will have many schools from around Yangon. The tournament will run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
We wish our young footballers the best of luck.

    High School Athletics

    Badminton

On Friday and Saturday of last week the ISY girls and boys badminton teams played in the Yangon Athletic Conference high school tournament. The girls played on Friday night and the boys played on Saturday morning. The tournament structure was three singles players would play each other and two doubles teams would play each other. This meant that there would be five games in each tie (the match up between two schools).
The girls started strongly against Yangon International School by winning 5-0. This is the ISY girls team that won second place at the recent SEASAC tournament. Next came ILBC. The girls were able to show their class by winning 5-0 again.
This left the last tie against International School Myanmar. The ISM team were looking good by winning all their ties as well. The winner of this tie would be the YAC champions. ISY played some really good badminton and even though we were hampered by an injury to our third singles player, ISY won 3-2. This meant we were the YAC HS girls champions!
The next day it was the boys’ turn. The boys had a lot to live up to from the previous evening. They did not disappoint.
The boys won all the ties 5-0!! This was no easy feat, as in the other teams there were some very good players. However, our boys used the experience that they gained from the recent SEASAC tournament and used this to full effect. ILBC proved to be ISY’s biggest competition but even they couldn’t hold off our dominant boys.
Well done to both our champion girls and boys YAC badminton teams.

    Touch Rugby

This week was another first for our high school touch rugby teams. On Wednesday ISY hosted a friendly touch rugby tournament. Three schools attended, Network International School, ILBC International School and CTGL VCH School. The tournament was separated into girls and boys divisions.
First up were our boys touch rugby team. I am not sure that they realized this but this was our first ever ISY boys touch rugby team. These boys have learnt the skills needed for touch rugby very fast and are fast becoming good players. The first school they played was Network. After some initial refereeing misunderstandings led to a try against ISY our boys showed the skills that they have been developing for the last couple of months. The ISY girls then played Network and demonstrated their skill and understanding of the game.
The next school was CTGL VCH School. Some of the rules were still being learnt by our guests but with our ISY athletes showing leadership and sportsmanship they took time to explain them and the games were played in good spirit.
Last but not least was ILBC. For our boys this was a game that they wanted to do their best in. Although this was a friendly tournament and scores were not being taken, if they had been, both teams would have been unbeaten. Our boys did a great job of controlling the game and came out ‘winners’. The girls followed this with a great display of controlled touch rugby to ‘win’ their game and also be undefeated for the tournament.
A special mention should go to the ISY girls touch rugby team and the development they have shown throughout this year. They would be the first to tell you that they knew nothing about the game and now touch rugby is an ISY mainstay!

    Swim Team

There is a swimming meet on today, the 26th of May. This meet is for swim team members from grades 3-8. Swim team members will be required to start their warmups at 3:00.
