Dear Chinthes,
This past week many of our Chinthe athletes were in action. ISY hosted a swim meet, our high school footballers traveled to British School Yangon, our high school volleyball teams played their last competition games in Yangon for the season and our middle school volleyball players started training for their new season.
Last Friday and Saturday our high school volleyball teams played in the Yangon Citywide Invitational tournament. This was a very competitive tournament and to find out how our teams went please continue reading below.
On Wednesday our high school football teams traveled across town to BSY. These games were much needed for our preparations for SEASAC. Continue reading for a report on how these games went.
On Thursday evening, ISY held a friendly swim meet. BSY and a couple of guest swimmers were competing against our Chinthes. Please see our Swim Team section for a report on this successful meet.
Also, middle school volleyball training has begun. If you would like to join or want more information, that can be found in the Middle School Athletics section.

High School Athletics
Volleyball
On Friday and Saturday past, our high school volleyball teams competed in the Yangon Citywide Invitational volleyball tournament. This was a good chance for our players to experience tournament style play before they head off to SEASAC. The standard of volleyball in Yangon has increased in the past few years and this tournament would be a good test for our players. Both our girls and boys teams progressed through pool play to make the semifinals. Without too much trouble our teams progressed through these games to make the finals.
Both our teams would play against International School Myanmar. ISM has a strong volleyball program so these would be tough games. And so they proved that. Unfortunately our teams were both pipped 1-2 to ISM.
Our athletes should hold their heads high because they fought till the end. And as they say, “There are only wins and lessons. There are no losers.”
Football
On Wednesday the ISY girls and boys football teams were welcomed by the British School Yangon. These matches would be much needed gametime for our football teams heading to the SEASAC competition soon. The girls played first followed by the boys.
The girls started their match strongly, by holding more possession than the BSY team. The BSY pitch is a lot bigger than the ISY field and so this meant that we could play a wide game. However, this took some getting used to for our girls. But, the girls did adapt and started to string together some great passes and put pressure on the BSY defense. To their credit BSY also put pressure on us and had some shots at goal, however, the ISY defense held strong and kept the ball out of our goal.
All this pressure by ISY meant that eventually the BSY defense had to break, and it did. ISY scored a wonderful flowing goal, with great teamwork shown in the build up.
ISY girls would eventually win 1-0.
Then it was then the boys’ turn to show what they can do. And they did. It was not long before ISY were on the scoresheet. And again. And again.
The boys played with fluidity and grace at times and this was reflected on how many chances they created for themselves and how many of them they converted. ISY also stayed strong in defense. In the end, ISY ran out to a good 6(ish)-0 victory.
Swim Team
On Thursday night, ISY hosted swimmers form the British School Yangon, MLA and Heroes schools. This was a chance for our young and experienced swimmers to show everyone what they have learnt from the recent internal swim meet and to show off all the hard work they have been putting into training so far this season.
The guest teams had some great swimmers in their number but ISY were up to the challenge. Our ISY swimmers swam as well as they could and proved that we are tough to beat in our own pool. This meet was a friendly one but if points were counted, ISY would have won the trophy!
Well done to all our swimmers for their commitment in the pool and patience and attitude out of the pool.
Here are the training times for our elementary, middle and high school swim teams.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 2:20-3:20 PM

Community Sport
There are currently two community sport opportunities happening at ISY. The first is community touch rugby. This is held on the ISY field from 5:30 PM every Thursday. Touch rugby is a fast paced game and easy to learn and is a great way to meet new people from our community and around Yangon. All levels of experience and fitness are encouraged. Come along and give it a try. If you would like to play please email Jonathan O’Sullivan on josullivan@isyedu.org.
On Saturday, there is an opportunity for parents to play badminton. Each Saturday there will be community badminton in the ISY gym from 2-4 PM. You will need to bring your own rackets and birdies.
