Dear Parents,

The fun fair was such a great experience for all, thank you to for supporting this student-led event. Congratulations to Grade 4 students who did a wonderful job hosting the children from Care for the Least during this event.

This week was MAP testing in the Elementary School. See below for more information on this.

Next Thursday is a teacher-only day at ISY. The teachers will be taking part in a ComPassion conference. This is an opportunity for the teachers to take part in professional growth activities. Our keynote speaker is Kathryn Berkett.

Social Development Ages 4-5

A child’s social development is unique to each child.  There is a wide range that is considered normal.  However, while your child’s development is unique, there are some milestones typical for many within a specific age range.  Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing some general milestones expected for children within a specific age range.

Children Ages 4-5 typically can:

  • Develop friendships
  • Show some awareness of moral reasoning, such as fairness or right and wrong
  • Can express awareness of others feelings and demonstrate empathy
  • Enjoy imaginative play with other children
  • Practice sharing and taking turns
  • Listen to others
  • Stick to a task for longer periods of time

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s social development, please speak to your child’s pediatrician or contact Ms. Patty, the elementary school counselor, at escounselor@isyedu.org.  She is happy to assist your family.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing

From February 20 to March 3, student in Grades 2 to 9 will be sitting MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics (and Science from Grade 4). MAP assessments are online adaptive assessments that provide useful data in developing a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic achievement and growth.

To ensure a fair and accurate assessment of a student’s academic growth and achievement, teachers combine MAP assessment data with all other student data that they have collected in the classroom. This combination of data informs teacher instruction in meeting the needs of each child. MAP assessment data is not the basis for a student’s academic grade as reported in Semester Report Cards.
