Executive Functioning Skill #4: Time Management
Time Management is being able to use time effectively to complete tasks. It means understanding time accurately and making decisions to use that time wisely. This includes prioritizing, estimating the amount of time a task needs to be completed, breaking tasks down into small parts, pacing, and keeping deadlines. These skills, learned early, will support your child’s success throughout their lifetime. Here are some ways you can support your child learn to work smarter, not harder:
- Discuss schedules and daily tasks at a regular time, such as breakfast or at your evening meal.
- Verbalize how you organize and keep your day tidy.
- Avoid over-scheduling your child. Allow them space to determine how to best use their “free” time.
- Model and discuss activities done to use time effectively, such as packing your bag the night before or choosing your outfit the night before.
- Provide time expectations for chores, such as “your room needs to be cleaned by tomorrow evening or 3:00 PM.”
- Provide incentives for completing chores on time.
- Set visual reminders for specific events, such as screen time.
If you are interested in further discussing strategies for supporting your child’s time management, feel free to reach out to me at escounselor@isyedu.org. I welcome the opportunity.
