Many Hats
Teachers have always been known for their resiliency and willingness to wear many hats. I’ve known Middle School science teachers, for example, who ended up teaching math and social studies, or the head of a math department who had an MS in kinesiology and helped design PE curriculum for the IB. In a normal year, our own ISY teachers are also coaches, service learning advisors, and ASA leaders.
But these days, it seems like we are all wearing more hats than ever before. It appears that every ISY teacher has a hidden talent, experience teaching other subjects at other schools, or has some crazy hobby that translates well into an ASA. I, for one, am teaching PE again this year, working as a homeroom teacher, and leading a handstand/headstand ASA. These are all things I love to do and things I have done in the past, but not things I expected to be doing when I became the Athletic Director here. I’m excited to be on this amazing team; one of the “all hands on deck” as we sail the seas of getting to know our virtual classrooms. I am learning as much from my students as they will ever learn from me (“Turn on your mic, Ms. Isom.” “Where is the attendance link, Ms. Isom?”) It’s also a great way for me to get to know students better, so that I can be a better Athletics Director for them in the near future.
I know this is the same in many households as well. Teachers aren’t the only ones wearing new hats these days. I think we are all going to come out of this more resilient – and more talented – than ever before.
Virtual ASAs Off to a Good Start
Session 1 After School Activities (ASAs) began this week with 55 offerings for students in grades 1-12. This was our first shot at a completely virtual ASA session. Teachers (and students) did a great job of creating some fun, new programs. In addition, many of our Service Learning programs came back on board pretty seamlessly, with the help of seasoned advisors and student volunteers.
We woke up Monday morning to a change to our Zoom accounts, which forced many ASA advisors to quickly edit their Zoom links for classes. I realize this caused delayed access for some of our classes this week. All links have now been updated in PowerSchool. Please remember to copy and paste these links into a new browser window, instead of clicking on the link.
If you have questions about your child’s activities, or have any trouble finding ASA links, please feel free to reach out to me directly at lisom@isyedu.org.
Cross Country Team
Coach Caitlin Tegenfeldt and Coach Jono O’Sullivan had their first team meeting this week and they are ready start training with the team (virtually). MS and HS runners are still welcome to join.
If your child is interested in participating, please reach out to the coaches directly at ctegenfeldt@isyedu.org or josullivan@isyedu.org.
Athletics and Community Education Posts
Community Education
The philosophy of ISY is to be both a school and a community center for its families and faculty. By offering activities and courses for adults, we are aligning with ISY’s vision of developing lifelong learners. With that in mind, we are excited to announce a few opportunities for Community Education this fall.
