Athletics and Activities
Dear Chinthes,
Dear Chinthes,
We have finished the school year. The first full year of athletics and activities in four years! This year has had its ups and downs, but on the whole, this year was a success for our students in athletics and activities. This year we were able to have regular competition on the sports fields, pool and courts. All our divisions had a chance to represent ISY in various different sports. Our activities program was the most diverse it has been in a long time including activities like STEM, gymnastics, touch rugby, rock climbing, a host of service learning activities and even SCUBA diving. Our students were able to try new and interesting activities and maybe start a lifelong love of a new hobby or sport.
This year was the first full year of a normal school life with more to come next year!
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the students, coaches, teachers and parents for your commitment to the athletics and activities program this year. There were some bumps in the road but with everyone coming together we showed the ISY spirit and made this year a success!
Elementary School Athletics
This year elementary school students were able to experience many sports through our after school activities program. There were also a number of tournaments that were held around Yangon. Football was the most popular activity, with three tournaments throughout the year. ISY had its first elementary school touch rugby team this year. We will be looking for more touch rugby to be played next year. We also invited Yangon International School for a basketball match recently where two teams were able to play.
This school year was a taster for what is planned for next year. There are already plans for many more sports events for our young elementary school athletes next year.
Middle School Athletics
This year the middle school athletes were able to enjoy a full year of Yangon Athletic League (YAC) athletics. We started the year with basketball, moved onto volleyball, then football and finished the year with badminton. Just being able to offer these sports as an option for our students was such a great feeling.
Next year there is a full schedule of middle school YAC athletics and tournaments planned. Next year will be even better than this year!
High School Athletics
This year was an even more exciting year for our high school athletes. This year we got to go to SEASAC! ISY competed in volleyball, basketball, touch rugby, badminton, tennis, softball, swimming and badminton at the SEASAC level this year. Next year it is the goal to send even more ISY athletes to experience what it is like to travel and compete overseas and make new, strong connections with other young people.
This year also saw a full year of Yangon Athletic Conference (YAC) competition. The competitions were in volleyball, basketball, football and badminton. Our students were given the opportunity to compete against other students from around yangon.
There was also a first for ISY this year. This year, building on the success of our girls touch rugby team, we had our first boys touch rugby team. I am sure there will be more to come next year.
This year we were also able to send a Model United Nations team to SEASAC as well. MUN is an important part of our school and the ideals of MUN fit in nicely with our school’s ethos. ISY also successfully hosted the Yangon MUN. This is another event on the long list of things that has not been able to happen over the last few years. The MUN program will be even stronger next year with more opportunities for our students.
