Athletics and Activities
Dear Chinthes,
Athletics has ramped up again at ISY. On the weekend our ISY footballers played in the Yangon Citywide Invitational Football Tournament. As well as that, this week we had middle school volleyball and high school football matches. Please read the below Middle and High School Athletics sections for a report on these matches. Middle School Athletics
ISY traveled to International School Myanmar on Wednesday for their latest Yangon Athletic Conference match. ISY traveled with both girls and boys teams. ISM has proven to be a quality volleyball school at high school level this year and we would find out if this would be the same for middle school.
The first game would be the girls. ISY started off slow with ISM building a substantial lead in the first game. All players had the chance to play in that first game. The second game was a bit closer with both teams playing better volleyball and having longer rallies. Unfortunately the form that ISY showed in the second game was not enough to win the match. ISY would lose 0-2. The girls all had fun and showed that they are improving.
Then it was the boys turn. The boys were challenged early by the quality of ISM. The ISM boys, just like the girls, were well drilled and had great command on the basic skills needed for middle school volleyball. Both teams traded points in the early exchanges of the match. Eventually the ISY boys would show their skill and expert coaching and pull out to a commendable lead. In the end they would win the first set comfortably. The second set would follow the same plot as the first, with early exchanges and then ISY pulling away and maintaining a sizable lead. The ISY boys would win 2-0.
SEASAC Information
SEASAC Golf
Next week it is the turn of our SEASAC golf team to travel and represent ISY. They will be traveling to Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday and compete Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and return Friday evening.
We wish the girls and boys representing the Chinthes all the very best!
What is SEASAC?
The Southeast Asian Student Activities Conference is the athletics and activities conference that ISY belongs to outside of Myanmar. Each year ISY sends students to athletic, Model United Nations conferences and arts festivals. These events are a very valuable opportunity for our students to connect with other like minded students across Southeast Asia. This section in the Athletics and Activities blog will outline some of the important information and general happenings around SEASAC events.
SEASAC Dates:
SEASAC Golf @ Bangkok Patana School, November 22, 23, 24
High School Athletics
Football
On the weekend ISY’s high school football teams played in the Yangon Citywide Invitational Football Tournament. This was a one day tournament hosted by ILBC International School and held at the South Dagon fields.
The tournament was run as a round robin league style, where each team played the other teams once. Each match was two ten minute halves which meant for fast paced matches. It was also hot on Saturday and although there is plenty of shade at South Dagon fields on the sidelines, there is never any shade on the fields. This makes for a hot day and hot competition!
The boys played exceptionally throughout the tournament. We managed to sustain our level of our high performance in every game winning the tournament with room to spare. As always our conduct on and off the pitch was exceptional. Well done boys!
The girls maintained a high level of play throughout the day. The girls defense warrants mention because they went the whole day without conceding a goal. However, on the other side we were unable to convert our opportunities into goals and were unable to score a goal as well. This meant that all our matches ended up 0-0. This also meant that the girls would finish 3rd on goal differential. The girls still played with spirit even though the conditions were hot.
YAC Football
On Thursday evening the girls and boys high school football teams were in action again. This time playing their first Yangon Athletic Conference league game. ISY hosted Yangon International School.
The girls played first and it would only be a bit of brilliance that allowed YIS to score a very good goal in the first half. This meant that ISY were 0-1 down at half time. The second half was an attacking game for the ISY girls. The girls piled on the pressure to the YIS goal line but YIS were well served by a good goalie who saved them on many occasions. A special mention should go to the ISY goalie who pulled off some great saves of her own for the home team. In the end the score would remain 0-1 to YIS.
These were only the first games of the league and there is much more action to follow.
Basketball
On thursday ISY also hosted Crane International School Myanmar (CISM) for two friendly basketball matches. CISM brought high school girls and boys teams. Although these were technically friendly pre-season matches they were still played with high intensity.
The girls played very well and there are some very good signs for the future of ISY basketball. However, they would lose the match by a small margin.
The boys also played well with high intensity. They would win their match.
These games were a good chance to play against different opponents before our SEASAC and YAC tournaments start.
After School Activities
This is the last week of ASAs. Thank you to all the teachers, parents, student leaders and outside helpers that have provided a wide range of activities for our students. I think there was something for everyone to try, make a difference and have fun. Also, thank you to the students that have given something new a go or continued with something they love.
The next session will start on January 29. In January, please look out for information about how to sign up and what activities are on offer in this blog as well as the Principals’ blogs and the “Friday Notices” that are sent out by email.
