Middle School (MS) Athletics

This week our middle school girls and boys volleyball teams traveled to International School Myanmar (ISM). ISM always puts up a good fight on the volleyball court and were not to be taken lightly. Our girls and boys teams knew they would have to play well to come away with two victories.
Our girls team played first and showed the skills that Coach Just has been practicing with them. They were able to beat a good ISM side 2 sets to 1. Coach Just was able to give all the squad playing time.
Then it was the boys’ turn to show off their skills. The boys played well to win the first set. Things changed a little in the last two sets as Coach Saw Htoo used his whole squad with new combinations. Unfortunately, the boys lost in the end, 1 set to 2.
The next games will be on the 30th of November against the ILBC International School at ISY.

High School Athletics

ISY girls and boys football teams qualify for home semifinals!

This week was an example of the fast paced nature of a Yangon Athletics Conference schedule. This week ISY played home against International School Myanmar (ISM) and then away against ISM!
On Tuesday our girls and boys high school football teams played ISM. The girls played first and truly set the pace. They went out to a 1-0 lead with a fine one touch goal from our ISY attacker. Then, the girls secured the win with another fine goal. This made the score 2-0 and that is what it was at the final whistle. This win shows us all how much this team has improved over the season with the help of Coaches Albert and Colin.
Then it was the boys turn to show how much they have developed over the season. Although the boys were down 0-1 early on in the match, they showed their character to level the scores 1-1. After this it was all out attack from both teams, however ISY seemed to have the better defense which allowed the attackers some more freedom. The final score was 4-1 which was a fair reflection of the game and where the boys are at as a team unit.
Then on Thursday it was back to ISM for the return match. And what matches they were!
ISM has a unique field setup. The field is a slight trapezoid shape which can change the way a team plays from one half to the next.
The girls started the rematch with confidence and had the measure of their opposition if not on the scoreboard. However, they showed how much they have improved this season and were up 2-0 in the first half. This meant that they could have the luxury of playing extra defenders in the second half to combat the field shape. The girls won with the final score remaining 2-0.
Then it was the boy’s turn. ISM would take the home field advantage and play to the preferred end so they would have better attacking opportunities in the second half. But, unlike the last game ISY was to go up early with a goal, and then another soon followed. The boys would go into the half time break leading 2-0. The second half was more defensive for ISY but they controlled the play and ISM could not get the ball in the goal.
Both ISY teams played well and are peaking at the right time for the semifinals and finals next week. The seedings are still yet to be determined with games between ISM and ILBC International School still to be played on Monday. However, ISY will be playing both their semifinals at home on Wednesday evening! These matches will start at approximately 3:40PM.

Swimming/Aquatics

Repeated Notice

Our wonderful head swimming coach, Coach Moe, will be leaving ISY at the end of December. She will be moving to Malaysia and has secured a job as a swim coach there. I am sure that everyone in ISY will join me in wishing her the best of luck in her new job and life.
ISY is hosting a farewell party for Coach Moe on the 10th of December from 11AM-1PM. There will be some fun pool games and fun races. Everyone is invited to come and show their appreciation of Coach Moe and what she has done for the ISY swim program.
With Coach Moe moving on, ISY has been searching for the best person to fill her place. I am pleased to announce that ISY has secured the services of a new head swim coach. The new head coach will be Coach Chu. She will take over the role in January but will start at ISY on Monday so she can get a chance to familiarize herself with the ISY swim program before Coach Moe leaves. Please pass by the pool and introduce yourself to Coach Chu.
Coach Chu is a former national swim team member. She is a certified International Swimming Coach, awarded by the ITK Internationaler Trainer Kurs, from the University of Leipzig, Germany. Coach Chu has a Bachelor Degree of Science focusing on Sports. She also comes to us with 17 years of experience in swimming and swim coaching.
