    Middle School Basketball Action

    Middle School Athletics

This middle school basketball season has been a very competitive season, especially in the boys division. On Wednesday, ISY hosted International School Myanmar for girls and boys matches.
The boys have been building up well towards the season defining tournament this coming Friday and this match would be a great yard stick measure to how they can expect to do. ISM look like the team to beat this season so this was always going to be a tough game. ISM ran out to an early 4-10 lead and then 8-20 in the first half. However, this is when the Chinthe spirit kicked in and the ISY boys made a strong comeback. Late in the second half our boys were trailing 18-22 and looked strong. However, ISM would prove to be too good on the day and win 22-33.
Despite this loss the boys will be in with a good chance in Friday evening’s season tournament.
The ISY girls middle school team has had a better run of the season so far. They remain undefeated and were looking to continue this on Wednesday night.
The girls started slowly to be 4-4 early on in the match. However, skill and size started to show as ISY showed strong defense and rebounding to consistently extend their lead. The girls were comfortable winners in the end. The ISY girls basketball team is looking like the team to beat in this Friday’s end of season tournament.
After the ISM matches both girls and boys squads were able to play an inter squad match by mixing up the A and B teams. These were played in very good spirit and it gave a chance for the younger players to get some game time with refs and scoreboards and crowds cheering. Thai was a nice way to finish the season for the B teams.
Today, Friday October 6, our middle school basketball teams play their end of season tournament. Last year the girls team won and the boys team came second. The girls will be trying their best to match that result and the boys team will be looking to go one better. All of ISY wishes these teams the best of luck and skill for this tournament.

    High School Volleyball Action

    High School Athletics

The first part of the high school volleyball season concluded on Friday evening. The Yangon Athletic Conference high school volleyball finals. The ISY girls team were playing off for 3rd and 4th spot and the boys were playing for the championship. First up was the girls.
The girls have had very tight games all season and in some regards could have been playing for the championship as well if not for a few points here and there. However, the girls put any disappointments about not playing for first place aside as they took a very focused mindset into this match. Coach Just wanted them to focus on doing the basics right for the whole match.
The girls started strong and raced out to a 2-0 set lead. The girls were playing consistently and making their shots count.
In the third set the girls started to falter a little so Coach Just called an unusual early time out. He reminded them of the basics and focusing throughout the game. That seemed to do the trick and the girls comfortably won their match 3-0.
Well done girls. We can all see that you are building towards the SEASAC tournament at the start of November.
Next up the boys had their chance to retain the YAC high school volleyball trophy. This would be a different match to the girls final. Both the boys and girls competitions have been very close this year and this match would highlight that. A five set thriller is the term that springs to mind.
The boys started off well winning the first set but not by much. The second set was only separated by a few points as was the third and forth! The set score was 2-2 leading into the final and deciding set.
Our ISY boys held their nerve and were able to win this tense affair 3-2 to become the YAC high school boys volleyball champions again. This should give them some momentum going into the SEASAC tournament as well.
Well done boys, this was a great effort, especially considering the quality opposition.
The girls and boys teams should also be congratulated for how they conducted themselves on and off the court. They played their best and did their best to win, however, they also were gracious in victory and truly showed the Chinthe Way.
Next up for the volleyball teams will be the Yangon Citywide Invitational on October 13 and 14.
