Next Friday 20th September, ISY will be hosting a ‘Compassion Conference’ as part of a professional development program for teachers.  In line with ISY’s mission that we are a community of compassionate global citizens, compassion is a very important topic at ISY.  Teachers from other schools in Yangon will also be invited as we reach out to the wider community. The key note speaker will be Wilma Derkson whose story was recently featured in the book ‘David and Goliath’ by Malcolm Gladwell.

Wilma will be speaking to us about fostering personal and institutional forgiveness.  She will share her choices to “let go” of heartbreak, which gave her the courage to navigate through the dark waters of sorrow. She needed to identify the issue and let go of the 15 misconceptions about grief to find her way out of feelings of anger and revenge back to compassion, forgiveness and love.

Fostering personal and institutional forgiveness is an essential characteristic of healthy families and especially healthy schools. This presentation will be based on her story – and how to “let go.”

Wilma will be visiting ISY with her husband, Cliff, who is an artist.

At the completion of Wilma’s talk on Friday, teachers from ISY will facilitate workshops from our mission, vision and strategic themes on instructional strategies for the topics of service learning, learning differences, communication, cultural intelligence, technology, and the experiences of third culture kids and scholarship students.

The following week on Tuesday 24th September at 5:30pm there will also be a Parent Workshop given by Wilma entitled ‘Forgiveness Starts in the Home’.  Parents greatly determine their children’s behavior. Children are like sponges–they model everything a parent does and incorporate what they see into their own lives. It is important that parents set the right examples for their children. Negative examples can be detrimental to a child’s development. How do couples forgive each other?
