Dear Parents,
We have had a great first week back after the break. Next week we will have special activities all week on the topic of Quality Education, which concentrates on ensuring that everyone has access to education; this is Sustainable Development Goal #4. There will be activities such as story times, Kahoot, Poetry writing in Life Skills classes, and a treasure hunt. The activities have been organized by the Student Council.
We started Pride of the Principal (POP) today in assembly. Students are recognized from each class, which demonstrates one of our learner attributes. This will continue each assembly. There are some photos below. Photos are also put on a special board near the office.

ART ON DISPLAY
We have a display cabinet in our office where art is on display.
INFORMATION MESSAGE
The playground has been closed since Wednesday and is being swept for caterpillars regularly. This weekend a pest control company will come and treat the area which should largely deal with the problem.
The rash is not contagious so students can interact without affecting each other.

TURNSTILES
The students received their Identification bracelets today. They will need to have these every day so that they can enter through the school’s turnstiles.
The turnstiles will be activated again on Monday, October 24th.
LEAVING SCHOOL
Elementary students cannot leave the school grounds on their own. If you wish your child to leave, this should be shared with ISY security.
HALLOWEEN PARADE
The Halloween Parade will be on Monday, the 31st of October. It will start at 1:40 and end at 2:10. We invite parents to come and watch the students parade around the school. We ask that you keep the walkways clear. The students will walk around the covered walkways and then circle the field to some fun Halloween music. The students should bring their costumes to school, they will get changed at 1:30, so it is important that their costumes are easy for them to change into independently. This event is something the students look forward to participating in. The event will be followed up on Friday evening with the Parent Association fun Halloween event at school.
Cashless Payments
In addition to using the student ID cards for the turnstiles ISY is re-introducing our cashless payment system. Parents and students can add money to their account using their ID card and then simply swipe their card at the food vendors to make payments. A brief explanation of how to top up your card can be viewed here. Below is a practical demonstration of the system by one of our Elementary Students. The top up system will go live on Monday 24th October. The system itself will go live on Tuesday November 1st.
International Day Cultural Show
During International Day there will be a cultural show in the evening. The Cultural Show is a chance to celebrate ISY’s student diversity and provide an opportunity for students to share dances, songs, or other acts connected to their culture. A form to sign up an act for the cultural show is here. Each performance should be no more than three minutes in length and should ideally involve more than one student.
MONDAY MATH CHALLENGE
Some of our children are participating in the Principal Monday Math challenge. We have our first two students who have earned four stars and will be receiving an invite to have lunch with me.
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Keeping Student Safe: ISY’s Child Protection Policy
ISY has a robust child protection policy that seeks to ensure student safety on several levels. Each of these levels provides protection from those that seek harm from a differing perspective, thus creating a thicker layer of protection for all students.
The first layer of protection involves training of all ISY staff and volunteers. Yearly, all staff receive training regarding child protection issues and their mandate to report. Further, all staff pledge to uphold the code of conduct.
The second layer involves advertising and recruitment. Clearly marking our school’s website and other publications as a school that protects students is a major deterrent. All candidates to be employed at ISY undergo a thorough check and are asked specific questions to safeguard students.
The third layer involves the students directly. The counselors teach a safeguarding curriculum that seeks to educate and empower students. This curriculum includes a variety of topics, such as but not limited to, assertiveness, identifying abuse. anti-bullying and digital citizenship.

Sustainable Goals Book Club
On Thursday, we read the book ‘Luna and Me by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
This is a true story of a girl who lived in a tree to save a forest. We loved the book; the words were pretty, and the pictures were great. The book was very calming, and it sent a very good message that we can make a difference. We think the book would be great for students at ISY, especially those who love nature and stories with strong girl characters. We loved Butterfly, the girl in the story, and how she felt about Luna, the tree in the story. We were amazed that she actually lived in the tree. The story has a very important message.
