Dear Parents,

This week we have the Halloween events. Monday is the Halloween Parade and Friday is the Parent Association event in the evening. Please remember that you must accompany your children to the Friday event. See more information in this blog.

Friday we will also be celebrating Call to Earth day, with activities put together by our Student Council group.

ACCESS TO EDUCATION SPECIAL WEEK – see some photos below of some work students did in their Life Skills classes.

Grade 2 Music Presentations

TURNSTILES

The students have received their Identification bracelets. They will need to have these every day so that they can enter through the school’s turnstiles.

Cash less payments start on the 1st of November.

HALLOWEEN PARADE

The Halloween Parade will be on Monday, the 31st of October. It will start at 1:40 and end at 2:10. We invite parents to come and watch the students parade around the school. We ask that you keep the walkways clear. The students will walk around the covered walkways and then circle the field to some fun Halloween music. The students should bring their costumes to school, they will get changed at 1:30, so it is important that their costumes are easy for them to change into independently. See images from past Halloween parade events.

This event is something the students look forward to participating in. The event will be followed up on Friday evening with the Parent Association fun Halloween event at school.

Cashless Payments

In addition to using the student ID cards for the turnstiles ISY is re-introducing our cashless payment system. Parents and students can add money to their account using their ID card and then simply swipe their card at the food vendors to make payments. A brief explanation of how to top up your card can be viewed here. Below is a practical demonstration of the system by one of our Elementary Students. The top up system will go live on Monday 24th October.  The system itself will go live on Tuesday November 1st.

International Day Cultural Show

During International Day there will be a cultural show in the evening. The Cultural Show is a chance to celebrate ISY’s student diversity and provide an opportunity for students to share dances, songs, or other acts connected to their culture. A form to sign up an act for the cultural show is here. Each performance should be no more than three minutes in length and should ideally involve more than one student.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Sportsmanship at ISY

There is much for a child to learn from competition.  Competition helps a child develop many values such as respect, discipline, time management and teamwork.  Whether competing in a structured activity or free time on the playground the values of positive sportsmanship are important when engaging in competition.  Recently, in Life Skills, we have been reviewing and practicing the key components of sportsmanship at ISY.  These include:

Play Fair and Respect the Rules.  A competitor wants to win because they played their best and followed the rules.  Children understand that sports and games are more fun for everyone when all participants play honestly and don’t sacrifice the rules to win at all costs.

Be Polite and Kind.  Encouraging teammates and opponents builds community.  After a game, shake hands and compliment the other players for their efforts.  Identify the strengths of others and their contributions to the game.

Encourage Everyone: Allow everyone opportunities to participate.  Celebrate each child’s unique skill sets and strengths.  Include all levels of skill and development.

Play for Enjoyment: Yes, winning is fun but competing only for awards or titles limits the game.  Recess is about having fun and building skills.

Be Mindful of Your Emotions:  Competition evokes strong emotions.  Being mindful of our emotional reactions is important to keep the game positive and helps us build resilience.
