Elementary Update – November 8th

Sandy Sheppard, Elementary School Principal

Dear all,

Another busy week here in the Elementary School. We have been busy with professional development. This week we had Linda Henke working with our early years teachers/teaching assistants on Reggio Emilia and coming up over the next few days we have Adaptive Schools training. We all enjoy learning here at ISY.

Have a fabulous 4 day weekend.

UWS SCHOOL COMPLETION

ISY has exciting news to report regarding the United World Schools (UWS) project.  You may remember that a few weeks ago we said that the school in Wan Kaung had started being built.  This morning we have found out that the school building is complete!  There is a photo attached to this email and more photos will be available on our Facebook page and in the next Service Learning Blog post.
A big thank you goes to the whole community for coming together to raise the first year’s funds.  The project so well encapsulates our mission of compassion, our vision of developing lifelong learners and our Service Learning theme.  This is, however, not the end of the project, but the beginning.  Now the children of Wan Kaung will be able to properly take advantage of the school premises, the UWS teacher and the supplies and materials also being provided by UWS.
As a reminder, our commitment is to partner with UWS for 10 years raising $10,000 USD every year.  The first main fundraising event for UWS will be happening on 7th December and will be the Sports-a-thon.  Like last year, students will raise money by being sponsored to take part in various activities.  More information will come out soon on how you and your family can take part.

PARENT CONFERENCES

Parent conferences will take place all day on the 21st of November. Sign up will be available on the 14th of November on Powerschool. Meetings are 15 minutes long. They start at 9:00 am and finish at 5:30 PM.

Specialist teachers are available on that day in the Cafeteria for drop in meetings. However, our Art Teacher, Mr Batty and our PE Teacher, Mrs Johnson will only be available before 12 as they also have Senior School commitments. We look forward to seeing you all at the conferences.

ASSEMBLY

We learnt so much in the assembly today run by Grade 5O. We learnt about parts of a book from 2S, Clouds from 3M and bird boxes and plants from 4E. 5O shared some of their writing. Well done everyone!

It feels good to have finished our first week online. There is a real positive energy around campus. That energy comes through online from our students and our teachers are building on that as they implement our planning and adapt it to meet our students needs and keep them engaged.
