Sandy Sheppard, Elementary School Principal

Dear all,

Another busy week here in the Elementary School. This week Grade 5 went on a field trip, we had a Math evening for parents and PreK parents organized a celebration for the upcoming special Thidingyut Celebration. Here at ISY we continue to ensure that learning is a fun experience for your children, we do this by providing many authentic learning opportunities for students to engage in everyday.

Have a fabulous weekend.

After School Urdu Language Classes at ISY

It is important that we celebrate and support the languages of all of our students. One way that ISY can do this is by supporting our community’s nationality and language groups to set up their own mother tongue language instruction classes as part of our After-School Activity (ASA) program.

We would like to promote an opportunity for children to learn Urdu after school. If you are interested in having your child(ren) learn Urdu, please fill out this short survey. This information will be shared with Ms. Munazza Ikram who is interested in starting Urdu classes in November. If you would more information about this opportunity, please contact Munazza at idmunazza@gmail.com

MATH NIGHT

Thank you to all of you who attended our Math Night last night. For those of you who could not make it here is the presentation.

LITERACY EVENT

Parents are free to visit their child’s classroom anytime during this period. The students will be involved in literacy activities that they can join in with.   This is an opportunity to see your child as a learner in the classroom.

The Literacy Open House is followed by a Literacy Chat by our consultant Joan Turner, which will take place from 9:30 to 10:00 in the Learning Commons.

U THANT FIELD TRIP

At U Thant House, Grade 5 students made connections to concepts and themes related to Culture Studies and their biography projects about people who have been forces for positive change.  They were also intrigued by U Thant’s non-violent approaches to world conflicts and by his concern for the environment, identifying links to our Globalization unit and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  Greta Thurnberg, Gandhi, and Mandela came up in discussions multiple times. What a great way to highlight our host country, people, and culture!

MOVIE NIGHT

All families are invited to join the showing of “The Secret Life of Pets 2” on Friday, October 25th.  This outdoor screening will be held in the library courtyard and will begin at 6:00 PM. The show is free to attend, although donations are appreciated.  Snacks will be for sale.

ISY SOCCER

ISY soccer has competed in several games and a YAC school tournament.  Our G5 team won their division of the YAC tournament and remain undefeated this season.  Our G3 and G4 teams have also shown great skill and finished 2nd and 3rd in the younger division of the YAC tournament.  We have been able to provide games for students in G1-G5, at times joining forces as across grade levels teams. This week our G4/5 combined team hosted Network and continued their winning streak.

Our ISY soccer overall record is 14-2-1.

Our G4/5 will be playing a doubleheader this afternoon against Yangon Academy at ISY and joining the ISM invitational tomorrow morning.

Our ES G4/5 Basketball teams have also had two preseason competition opportunities.  We travelled to ILBC were we went 1-1 and to yesterday to BSY where 2 teams played 3 games each.  Team 1 went 3-0 while Team 2 finished 2-0-1.

Many more opportunities coming up soon!

Celebrations in PreK

It was great to see a parent presenting in our PreK class this week. Along with this many of the PreK parents joined to organize this special event. Thank you all.

FLU INFORMATION

At the health clinic we are seeing an increase in children with cold symptoms. Some have been out of school sick with the flu. To prevent further spreading of the flu in our community, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
  • Mild sore throat
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever.  100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or 37.8 degrees Celsius or higher
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
  • Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
  • Red, watery, burning, itching eyes or yellowish discharge.

To help prevent the flu and other colds, please encourage good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
  • Cover sneezes or coughs with a tissue or elbow. After using a tissue, throw it away and wash hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

The ISY policy states that a child who has a fever (100 F or greater, 37.8 C) should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of fever medication. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.

At the school, we are encouraging everyone to remind students about the importance of hand washing as well as proper cough and sneezing etiquette. Also, our custodians are cleaning the surfaces with disinfectant products on a daily basis.

Please let the school know if your child is diagnosed with doctor confirmed flu, and which type of flu if known.  Please also take a moment to click on the links below for more information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Thank you in advance for helping make this school year as healthy as possible.  Please contact the clinic if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

ISY Health Clinic
