Inspired to Action: An Interview with Cathy Berger Kaye

ISY was fortunate to host Cathy Berger Kaye, a world-renowned service learning expert who worked with teachers to connect classroom learning to real-world service. Ms. Cathy also led a session on belonging with ISY students. Even with her packed schedule, Ms. Cathy kindly took a few minutes to speak with me for our Service Learning Blog.

To me, service learning is an opportunity to help those in need, while learning more about the world.  To Ms Cathy, she sees it as the choices everyone makes every day. She decided to work with schools because of the extraordinary abilities, ideas and energy students have – they have the ability to see things adults don’t.

Ms. Cathy shared that instruction is to put in, while education is to bring out. This resonates strongly with me because it reminds me of ISY’s mission and vision. Learning isn’t just sitting in a classroom, it’s about recognizing how we can be compassionate with the information we have.

Ms. Cathy believes that students learn best when they connect their subjects with something meaningful. For example, applying parabolas in math to build something helpful in our community. This approach helps us remember what we learn and inspires us to create positive change.
