Life as a STUCO Officer

What is STUCO? Student Council. What is the purpose of STUCO? Our first responsibility is to represent students when discussing issues with school leadership. We also organize social events and we support service learning projects by organizing events such as the Family Fun Fair.

People may believe that life as a High School STUCO officer is too stressful, our schedules too busy, and the workload too much. However, in my experience, that’s not true at all. Although sometimes the planning is stressful, we have to remember that there are five officers. Even though we each have our own roles and responsibilities, the line is flexible, and we can all help out with everything. For example, even though I am the PR officer, the others often help me draft emails or make posters. Also, we have two grade representatives from each grade, which helps reduce the workload.

We officers have a group chat so that we can all stay up to date with what is going on and what we need to do in the next meeting. We plan a lot of things via Google Chat, so it’s important that all of us are constantly active there. Similar to Middle School STUCO, the first half of the meeting is mostly debriefing, assigning jobs to each member, and taking note of any future events we need to plan. The second half is where most of the work happens. We often split into little groups to work on what we need to, and if we don’t finish the work in the STUCO meeting, we often work on it at home.

I have developed some key skills, such as leadership, time management, communication skills, and working with others, including students and faculty.

In conclusion, even though it can get a bit stressful at times, High School STUCO has a team of highly capable students who are willing to put in extra work and collaborate on tasks to get them done quicker. I am proud that my fellow students trust me enough to be their voice.
