ISY Service Learning
One Plastic Bag At A Time

Two weeks ago, the Green Initiative service learning group initiated a new project called EcoLab, which aimed to make our campus greener and reduce waste. EcoLab is taking bold steps towards sustainability, starting with our upcoming project to explore introducing biodegradable plastic bags. This initiative not only reflects our commitment to the environment but also showcases the students’ determination to make a real difference within the ISY community.
“We thought of starting this project after noticing the rising plastic waste and pollution in our community. We realized we could make a difference by spreading awareness and taking action” said Leanna (grade 10), one of the student leaders of EcoLab.
In an ideal world, there would be no plastic bags. We are also promoting the use of reusable bags. But EcoLab’s vision doesn’t end here. We also plan to revolutionize our school’s cafeterias by replacing their paper cups and plates with biodegradable items. This helps to reduce non-recyclable waste used daily, aligning with ISY’s goal of creating a more sustainable school environment. By addressing this issue, EcoLab is not only thinking globally but locally as well, starting off with creating small changes that have a big impact.
“As part of ISY’s service learning program, we have the opportunity to create projects that promote sustainability and educate others on protecting the environment. Stay tuned for our upcoming events” said Thin Ei (grade 10), one of the student leaders of EcoLab.
Together, we can make a difference – one biodegradable plastic bag at a time.
