An Adaptive School

Mike Simpson

Secondary School Principal

December 1, 2023

Last month, we were fortunate to have worked with Dr. Bob Garmston, a very influential educator and academic whose work has had a profound impact on teaching and learning around the world.

Dr. Garmston is a co-developer of Adaptive Schools. Adaptive Schools ‘presents a productive, practical set of ideas and tools for developing collaborative groups in becoming effective and better equipped to resolve complex issues around student learning.

Adaptive Schools strategies help teachers collaborate effectively in planning to meet the needs of all of our students. Also, and very importantly, these strategies can be used in the classroom with the students to create meaning and facilitate learning.

Adaptive Schools strategies can be very simple or quite complex but they are all grounded in research around the science of learning. Adaptive School strategies build upon best practices, creating a consistency in how instruction happens and learning occurs throughout the school.

Chinthe Expeditions Update

Parents will have now received an email with more specific details about their child’s grade level Chinthe Expedition.

This email has a link to an Information and Authorization Request Form. If you have not done so already, please fill in this form as soon as possible. This form collects important contact, passport, medical, dietary, and other information about your child. You will also upload a picture of your child’s passport details page. This information is important for organizing the expeditions and ensuring that every child’s needs are met.

If you have any questions about anything to do with your child’s grade level Chinthe Expedition, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Simpson or the Secondary School Office.

All of this year’s Chinthe Expeditions will be facilitated by the Traidhos Visiting Schools Program (VSP) in Chiang Mai. We partnered with VSP before the pandemic in providing Week Without Walls experiences for our students. We are very pleased to be working with them again.

VSP will work with ISY teachers to create, support, and supervise rich service, cultural, and adventure experiences for our students. Please click on the following links to get a sense of the fantastic location and facilities that we have access to in partnership with VSP:

December Appreciation

Every December at ISY, we come together as a community to show our gratitude towards our custodians, maintenance staff, security team, administrative and instructional staff, and all other staff members who help make our school special. This year, we would like to present our staff with longyis from our ISY community as a sign of appreciation, thanks and respect.

One longyi will cost 15000 kyats and donations can be made in 3 ways:

  1. Online Cashless Donation using these instructions.
  2. In person at the Chinthe Zay Store or at the Business Office.
  3. Instead of cash, new longyis can also be donated by leaving them on the front steps.

The donation deadline is Wednesday, November 6, 2023.

Kind Regards,

High School Student Council (STUCO)

Activities & Athletics

Here is a link to Mr. O’Sullivan’s Athletics and Activities Blog for up-to-date information regarding Activities and Athletics at ISY.

Good luck to our Boys and Girls High School Football teams today – they are both playing in the YAC Championship Final!

SEASAC Golf

Our students demonstrated collaboration, communication, courage, and reflection during their participation in the SEASAC international golf tournament in Bangkok. By taking the risk and pushing themselves to compete on an international stage, they showcased their courage and determination to excel. Cyrus came in third place out of a field of 80 golfers in addition to winning the Most Valuable Player award for the boys. Let Ya came in 11th in the girls competition and won the Most Valuable Player award for the girls. Congratulations to all involved!

UK University Visit

Two weeks ago, ten UK-based universities visited ISY for the benefit of our students. Students were learning about the different options they can study at a range of universities. This was organized by Mr. A-G, our High School Counselor to help our students find a university that will fit them the best, a place where they can feel comfortable and belong.
