Last week, ISY was fortunate to host Mr. d’Arcy Lunn as our visiting expert. With over 20 years of experience of leading workshops in more than 90 countries, he was the best person to answer our burning questions about service learning. Mr. d’Arcy worked with elementary and secondary students, inspiring them to make “a teaspoon of change.”
Here’s what some Chinthes thought!
“Through my time with service groups, I’ve always believed that direct action was the only way to make a meaningful impact. However, Mr. d’Arcy’s presentations have shown me that service isn’t just about visiting organizations or making donations – it’s about the compassion and ambition within to support others. This experience has empowered me to continue promoting advocacy through the Service Learning Blog, one teaspoon of words at a time.” Eaindray (grade 9)
“During his presentation, Mr. d’Arcy shared his thoughts on how small acts of service lead to big changes – making a difference with “a teaspoon of change.” He also shared that service is not just the act of supporting someone, but to really connect with the people while you’re doing so. His presentation truly allowed me to see service learning in a new light, and inspired me to continue making small changes every day for a lasting and meaningful impact.” Claire (grade 10)
“Mr. d’Arcy also encouraged us to make sure that we are supporting out of goodwill and genuine care for others. He reminded us that true service is not measured by the scale of our actions, rather, it’s the small things like sincerity and consistency that matter.” Leanna (grade 10)
“From my perspective, students join service learning groups for many reasons. After listening to Mr. d’Arcy’s presentation, I could feel his genuine love and passion for helping others and spreading kindness. His dedication inspires me to view service learning as an opportunity to make a real difference to the world around me.” Thin Ei (grade 11)
We hope that everyone continues to be inspired by the ideas Mr. d’Arcy shared with us.

ISY Leading Child Safety in Yangon
ISY takes great pride in being a leader in the educational community when it comes to child safety, placing the well-being of our students at the forefront of our mission. Our child protection policy, in place since 2016 and updated annually, adheres to best practices and incorporates progressive strategies to ensure a safe learning environment. This comprehensive policy includes regular training for all employees, thorough background checks and reference screenings, a personal safety curriculum for students, clear reporting procedures, and a robust code of conduct. Each component of the policy is designed with a student-centered approach, reinforcing our unwavering commitment to child protection. This year, ISY is partnering with a respected child protection community leader to review and enhance our policy, further affirming our dedication to providing the highest standard of care and safeguarding for our students. The complete policy can be found here and on our website in both English and Myanmar.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please contact the ISY counselors, Patty Amundson-Geisel at escounselor@isyedu.org or Mick Amundson-Geisel at mamundson@isyedu.org.

Wear a Hat!
It is very hot and sunny now. It is important that we protect ourselves against the sun. When outside in the sun and especially during PE classes, students have been asked to wear a hat.
Myanmar Language, History, and Geography
On Tuesday, February 4, representatives of the Ministry of Education will be visiting our campus to review our Myanmar Language, History, and Geography programs.
As part of that visit, our Myanmar students from Grades 1 will be tested in Myanmar Language, History, and/or Geography. The testing will last for 45 minutes to an hour. This testing is part of a review of the programs that the Ministry is requiring us to offer and will not be used to grade our students.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
