Service Learning – On the Right Track
Todd Davis, Service Learning Coordinator
10 October 2019
Service learning is really beginning to take shape at ISY. Students are becoming more and more familiar with the 5 stages of service learning which are: Investigation, Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration. Listening to students talk about their investigations and preparation is becoming the norm around ISY which is a strong indicator that we’re on the right track toward impactful action
From flood drives, to recycling campaigns, to building a school, you will find a brief summary of just a few of the many service learning initiatives happening at ISY.
The primary Recycling ASA (Grade 2-5) is creating two short dramatized videos, one for younger students and one for older students on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. This has been done with the help and support of energetic Ms. Petra and videographer, Mr. Adam Fraser. The videos promise to remind us all about of why it’s important to recycle, and how we do it at ISY.
The ISY Community Action flood drive culminated nicely for people in the Mon State with a truck load of much needed items including blankets, mosquito nets, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, clothing, books and much more. Donations were successfully delivered last Wednesday, Oct. 2nd. Thank you to everyone who made a donation.
It’s official, we just received the latest from United World Schools (UWS) that the Wan Kaung Village School, funded through the generosity of the ISY community, is in the process of being built! This is exciting news and we will be sharing more information and images from the construction site with you very soon. Also, please check out the large poster with lots of info about the project, which can be found on the wall of the SAS gym.
Last but not least for today, MCHP – Myanmar Children Health Project is an amazing group of ISY students who are actively working to reduce the risk of children contracting Hepatitis B. MCHP partners with “Myanmar Pharmaceutical and Foodstuffs Industry” (MPFI) to provide vaccinations for hundreds of at risk children living in and around Yangon. This ambitious endeavor involves ISY students doing all the fundraising needed, as well as educating children and their families about the importance of getting vaccinated. Finally, on the day of the vaccinations, they are right there holding the hands of the children to make it as easy and painless as possible. It’s important that we all understand that ISY students do not perform any medical procedures. They are simply with the children for moral support and do all the fundraising for this project to happen.
