Sandy Sheppard, Elementary School Principal

Dear all,

We hope to see our many families at the Movie Night tonight. Please remember that students should be accompanied by an adult. The Elementary Student Council is hosting the Movie Night tonight at 6:00 PM. The movie is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the lower courtyard. Admission is a donation to the Chinthe Fund. Snacks and juice will also be sold. All proceeds will support our ISY service-learning partnerships.

Grade 4 is hosting a book sale on Monday and Tuesday from 10 am in the lunch room, 5,000 kyat to fill a bag. The money will be used to support a service learning project they are engaging in.

Look below for ways you can support the upcoming Family Fun Fair through donations of items.

Next week we will celebrate with a special Lunar New Year assembly for the whole school, thank you to our Parent Association and all the parents involved for their work in helping make this special event happen.

Take care,

Ms. Sheppard

ISY Fun Fair Donations

We are excited to announce the upcoming Fun Fair on Saturday, 17th February from 4pm till 7pm at ISY.  This event promises to be a day filled with joy, community spirit, and fun activities for all ages. However, to make it a success, we are seeking donations of gently used items and clothing that can be sold or used in various fair activities. Your contributions will play a pivotal role in making our fair both enjoyable and meaningful. All proceeds from the fair will go directly to the Chinthe Fund, which is dedicated to supporting our partner organizations. Donations, including clothing (for all ages and sizes), books, toys, games, household items and decor, electronic gadgets in working condition and sports equipment, are all welcomed. Donations can be dropped off in the baskets provided at the ISY front steps, on weekdays, until February 10th. Thank you for your support.

Working Memory: Another Executive Functioning Skill to Support Your Child’s Success

This week we are discussing the executive functioning skill of working memory.  Working memory is the ability to maintain or hold information in the brain while using that information to perform a task.  We use this skill every day in life, for example, remembering your shopping list, asking for directions and remembering the steps in order to get there, learning the name of someone new and keeping it in mind throughout the conversation. Strong working memory skills can help your child be more efficient and accomplish tasks quicker.  You can support your child develop working memory skills by:

    • Playing memorization games like memory or concentration.  Children have to remember where specific images or cards are in order to be successful in the game.
    • Allow your child to teach you skills, like how to dribble a basketball or play a video game.
    • Play card games like UNO, Go Fish or Crazy Eights.  Children need to remember the rules, know their cards and play appropriately.  All working memory skills.
    • Encourage active reading.  When listening or reading a story, have your child draw a mental image of what is happening.  Keeping character and plot sequence in order can assist in developing working memory.
    • Chunk up multiple step directions. Long sequences are hard for anyone to remember, provide & have your child complete 2-3 steps before delivering more the last 3 steps.
